Fox to Stream Premiere of “Fringe”

Written by: Pete

Fox to stream premieres for dorms
‘Fringe,’ ‘Terminator’ bow to college audiences
By MICHAEL SCHNEIDER

In a first, Fox will stream the premiere of “Fringe” and season opener
of “Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles” online at the same time
as they bow on TV.

But there’s a catch: Only computer users on college campuses will be
able to log in to watch the simul-stream.

Move helps Fox expose the trend-setting college audience — who are
more likely to have computers than TVs in their dorm rooms — to the
shows.

Computers logging into Fox.com from a college-based .edu domain will
be given full streaming access to “Terminator” on Sept. 8, the same
night it returns on Fox, and the series premiere of “Fringe” Sept. 9,
when it launches on the net.

Fox content strategy senior VP Bill Bradford came up with the idea
after noticing that .edu addresses were among Fox.com’s top visitors.

“We talked about what we could do with colleges given the fact that we
have so much traffic coming from them,” said Fox Entertainment
chairman Peter Liguori. “The light bulb went off — by simul-streaming
‘Fringe’ and ‘Sarah Connor,’ (the college students) get to see the
show, and we get the increased fanbase and buzz.”

The sites also will offer up behind-the-scenes footage, cast
interviews and musicvideos for college viewers.

The promotion also comes as Nielsen begins to measure college-student
viewing in a limited fashion. Last year Nielsen started including
college students living away from home in its national People Meter
ratings. The ratings firm doesn’t consider dorm rooms as separate
households but includes students who happen to be a part of a Nielsen
family.

Ironically, college students are among the most notorious for using
their .edu addresses to illegally download copyrighted content —
which perhaps include the bootleg copies of “Fringe” currently making
the Internet rounds. Now that “Fringe” will be streamed, Liguori said,
“There’s no need to do anything dumb.”

Liguori said it’s too soon to determine whether the network will
regularly stream premieres or regular episodes simultaneously with
their on-air runs. “We’ll see how this experiment goes,” he said.

Fringe Promotional Posters - Featuring Anna Torv

Written by: John

Here’s a look at 3 of the promotional posters that’s being put out by Fox. Is it just me or is Fox using sex to sell Fringe? Otherwise, why would 2 of the 3 posters be all about a beautiful woman: Anna Torv (Olivia Dunham) and the the third poster she’s front and center.

Ok, why ask why? I liked them and you probably did too.

Fringe Script Security at All Time High

Written by: John

In an interview with Joshua Jackson, Total Sci Fi pulls out some interesting comments from Joshua about the security of the Fringe script. I guess it’s understandable why the networks like Fox want to keep the Fringe script secured, but it seems like it’s almost impossible to keep it from getting leaked. There are spoilers all over the internet and Fringe is no exception. Just do a quick search and you’ll see a long list of spoilers for your viewing pleasure.

Either way, the following interview with Joshua Jackson about securing scripts in Hollywood is quite interesting.

Had you auditioned for a J.J. Abrams project before?

I had auditioned for Star Trek, which I think was sort of my audition for the series. Nobody will say that but I think that is the truth. As much as I am enjoying working for J.J. and Bad Robot right now, he is like a hunted man. Everything that he does or writes down, people are trying to get on the internet. I have never dealt with so much security. My script has my name printed on it, they have to change the letters inside the script to serialize them so they know who leaked it in case it gets out. I also had to sign a non-disclosure agreement for when I get my script every week.

Lost has certainly struggled to keep that top secret element as well.

In a perfect world, hopefully Fringe is that good and obviously that is a high water mark with the Bad Robot people. J.J. promotes from within his own company and the guys at Lost are brilliant. Everything they’ve done with that show is brilliant and the hardcore fanbase is rapid and probably a little unhealthy [laughs]. That being the case, when you can get people that engaged in a show, it just allows you a certain freedom. Most of TV is pretty thin but Lost is incredibly detailed because they know people appreciate it.

You read for the role of Batman that ultimately went to Christian Bale. Did you also meet the producers for the upcoming Justice League movie?

No, I wasn’t in Los Angeles and in the crazy world we live in with all the Harry Knowles [type journalism] the script could never leave the office. For the X-Files movie, I went to meet [producer/director/writer] Chris Carter and asked if I could read the script. He said, “There is only one script and it is in a vault in my desk in my office. There are no pages to read.” I’m like “Okaaaay…”

Fox’s Kevin Reilly Discusses Fox and Fringe Fans

Written by: John

Video of TVWeek.com’s interview of Fox Kevin Reilly on “Fringe” and “Dollhouse.” TVWeek columnist/deputy editor Josef Adalian asks how Fox plans to bounce back after the writers strike and about the network’s upfront plans.

Kevin Reilly gives a nice look at how a network executive from Fox looks at building and releasing new TV shows along with the hype created around TV shows on Fox like Fringe.

I also loved how fans of a TV show that hasn’t even premiered have already started a Save campaign. Should we start a Save Fringe on Fox campaign?

Fringe - Publicity Photo Shoot

Go behind the scenes of a Fringe photo shoot. This definitely looks like it has the making of a hit. However, I guess most photo shoots do a good job making the actors look good.
